Happy Birthday to Me! Here are 5 Things I’ve Learned in the Past Year

I am so grateful, thankful and blessed to see another year of life. There were days where I didn’t think it would be possible for me to come this far. So to have waken up this morning to celebrate another birthday is more than I could have ever asked for. So, here I am – a 24 year old still exploring what the world has to offer and learning along the way.

There are so many stories I could share about my experiences over the past year. It’s been a roller coaster of emotions. Some days darker than others, but I am grateful to be here to soak in another day of sunshine and share my story with you and those who come across my blog.

Life is never perfect – and to be quite honest, I’m glad it’s not. If it weren’t for the bumps in the road and the stumbles in my path, I wouldn’t be who I am or where I am today. It’s my journey that has brought me here and brought purpose and meaning to my words in every post. So as I sit back and think of the past year of my life, here are five things I’ve learned:

Do What Makes You Happy

Life is short. Do what you love and bask in the things that make you happy. So that vacation you’ve been dreaming about? Book that ticket! That new job you’ve been nervous about? Give it your all! You never know what could happen and if it has the potential to put a smile on your face, then go after it and never look back.

Try Something New

So full transparency, this is coming from the same person who still orders the same thing on the menu every time she goes out. But, honestly, it’s worth trying something new. If you’re anything like me, then the unknown scares you. It makes you anxious to not know what could happen next, but some of the greatest moments are borne out of uncertainty.

Live in the Moment

Recently, I’ve been letting go more and enjoying not knowing what’s next – even if that means waking up without a schedule for my day. I’ve noticed that without meticulous planning, I’ve been able to take note of things I never really paid attention to before. This new awakening has been a new fresh breath of life and opened a new wave of creativity and inspiration.

It’s Okay to Say No

I’ve always come from a place of yes. Even if that “yes” meant sacrificing my peace or mental health. For nearly all of my life, I’ve been the one to put others needs before my own, no matter what that would mean for my well being, but in the last year, I’ve realized sometimes, we have to put ourselves first and that’s okay – even if it means saying no.

You Matter

And this is where I end my post. It’s the final and biggest lesson I’ve learned in the past year. I have had so many days where I felt invisible. Like I didn’t even need to be here, but I matter. YOU matter. We are all somebody special in this world and if nobody has said it to you lately, then listen to me when I say I’m grateful you’re here. While we may not know each other personally, you are special. You are important. You matter. Don’t ever let anybody convince you otherwise.
